The Tear Drop Stitch is a lovely knitting stitch for intermediate knitters. Use it for larger projects such as throws or baby blankets where the pattern is highlighted, thus creating a beautiful texture.
I have two different swatches using different size needles for this stitch. Both swatches use worsted weight yarn but changing the needle size gives you a slightly different look on the finished result.

Yarn: Caron Simply Soft in Sunflower, Worsted Weight
Knitting needles: US 8 (5.00mm)

Yarn: Red Heart Soft in Grape
Knitting needles: US 6 (4.00mm)
This stitch uses basic knit and purl stitches for the increases and ssk (slip, slip, knit), k2tog (knit 2 together) and psso (pass slipped stitch over) for the decreases. You will notice that the ssk decrease creates the left slanting decrease while the k2tog creates the right leaning decrease.
Abbreviations:
- st(s) – stitch(es)
- k – knit
- p – purl
- sl – slip 1 stitch knitwise
- ssk – slip, slip, knit
- k2tog – knit 2 stitches together
- psso – pass slipped stitch over
Pattern:
Cast on multiples of 4 stitches +1.
After casting on, you are automatically faced with the wrong side (WS) to work on. Since the pattern starts on the right side (RS), knit all stitches on the current row after casting on.
- Row 1 (RS): P1, *(k1, p1, k1, p1, k1) in the next st, p3; repeat from * to end of row.
- Row 2 (WS): *K3, p5; repeat from * to last st, k1.
- Row 3 (RS): P1, *k5, p3; repeat from * to end of row.
- Row 4 (WS): Same as Row 2; *K3, p5; repeat from * to last st, k1.
- Row 5 (RS): P1, *ssk, k1, k2tog, p3; repeat from * to end of row.
- Row 6 (WS): *K3, p3; repeat from * to last st, k1.
- Row 7 (RS): P1, *sl1, k2tog, psso, p1, (k1, p1, k1, p1, k1) in the next st, p1; repeat from * to end of row.
- Row 8 (WS): K1, *p5, k3; repeat from * to end of row.
- Row 9 (RS): *P3, k5; repeat from * to last st, k1.
- Row 10 (WS): Same as Row 8; K1, *p5, k3; repeat from * to end of row.
- Row 11 (RS): *P3, ssk, k1, k2tog; repeat from * to last st, p1.
- Row 12 (WS): K1, *p3, k3; repeat from * to end of row.
- Row 13 (RS): P1, *(k1, p1, k1, p1, k1) in the next st, p1, sl1, k2tog, psso, p1; repeat from * to end of row.

Repeat rows 2-13 for pattern. Bind off on Row 7 or Row 13, omitting the increases. The photo above shows the back side of the Tear Drop Stitch.
